Dosage Guidelines

Health Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society both recommend 1,000 i.u. of vitamin D3 daily. However, this recommendation is currently under review, since many health practitioners already recommend higher daily amounts during fall, winter and spring.

About Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 (calciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin so critical to human health that our skin manufactures it in response to sun exposure. Its role in bone health is well-documented but vitamin D3 receptors are also present and active in a variety of tissues outside of bones, such as in heart muscle cells and arterial muscle cells. This would suggest that vitamin D3 plays a significant role in proper cardiovascular function and blood pressure. In addition, it appears that vitamin D3 improves immune function by increasing the production of anti-microbial proteins that provide a natural defense against disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

Deficiency is Common

Vitamin D3 deficiency is more common than one would think. Food sources---liver, fatty fish and fortified liquid milk products---are no longer consumed in the quantities they once were. Also our ability to synthesize vitamin D3 in our skin from UVB rays is reduced by sunscreen products, air pollution, medications, darker skin pigmentation, older age and a poor state of health. Population studies have suggested that societies with low blood levels of vitamin D3 have a higher incidence of multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, breast and colorectal cancers. In addition, vitamin D3 deficiency leads to softening of the bones (rickets) in children and osteomalacia in adults.

Common conditions that increase one’s vitamin D3 requirements:

  • Living in a cold climate
  • Dark pigmented skin
  • Frequent infections
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Vegan diet
  • Osteopenia and osteoporosis
  • History of breast or colorectal cancer
